Suffrage Lecture and Exhibit
Thursday, October 3 at 7 p.m. Barbara Berenson, Attorney and Author Lecture - Massachusetts in the Women’s Suffrage Movement Buttonwoods Museum Women in the United States won the right to vote with the passage of the nineteenth amendment to the Constitution in 1920. Everyone knows about the famous Seneca Falls Convention in July 19/20, 1848. But an important part of the struggle took place right here in MA. As early as October 16/17, 1850 (before the Civil War), Lucy Stone and other abolitionists launched the organized women's movement at the first National Woman's Rights Convention, held in Worcester, MA. After the war, state activists founded the Boston-based American Woman Suffrage Association to lead campaigns across the country. This event is free. Suffrage Exhibit October 5 – 31 In partnership with the Haverhill League of Women Voters, the Buttonwoods Museum presents an exhibit focusing on the Suffrage Movement in Haverhill and Massachusetts against a backdrop of the national movement.
